What the Web (and SL) Means for Science

Timo Hannay, Director of Web Publishing at Nature Publishing Group in London, recently gave a luncheon talk at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, titled "What the Web Means for Science."

Here is a link to a video recording of the talk. More after the break...

Timo talked about how journals are becoming more like databases, how databases are becoming more like journals, how peer-review is being experimented with, how blogs and wikis are affecting scientific communications, and then he talked about Second Life. And what SL examples did he give? The spaceflight museum, the "Schizophrenia house" (i.e. the UC Davis-sponsored schizophrenia education building in the Sedig sim), and Nature's new island (not yet open to the public). He specifically mentioned the ISM's life-sized rockets, the Solar System simulator, the rocket ride, and the Space Shuttle model. It was very exciting to hear such enthusiasm coming from someone at Nature.
